World number one tennis player Novak Djokovic was exempted from Covid vaccination because he contracted the virus in December, his lawyers said in a court filing in Melbourne. “The date of the first positive test for Covid PCR was recorded on December 16, 2021”, explains the act whose aim is to reverse the cancellation of the visa to enter Australia.

A priest from the Holy Trinity Serbian Orthodox Church in Melbourne asked to visit the nine-time Australian Open champion to celebrate Orthodox Christmas but was turned down by immigration officials because the hotel is under lockdown.
“Our Christmas is rich in many customs, and it is so important that a priest visits him,” the church’s dean, Milorad Locard, told the Australian Broadcasting Corp. “The whole thing around this event is appalling. That he has to spend Christmas in detention … it is unthinkable.”

Djokovic received calls from his native Serbia, including from his parents and the president, who hoped to boost his spirits on the holiday.
On Instagram, he posted: “Thank you to the people around the world for your continuous support. I can feel it and it is greatly appreciated.”
He has been confined to the detention hotel in Melbourne pending a court hearing on Monday, a week before the start of the tournament, where he is seeking to win his record-breaking 21st Grand Slam singles title.

During the day, Djokovic’s supporters, waving banners, gathered outside the Park Hotel, used to house refugees and asylum-seekers. Meanwhile, Djokovic’s family held an exciting press conference at their restaurant in downtown Belgrade, with his previous nine Australian Open trophies on display.
“They keep him in captivity. They are trampling on Novak completely to trample all of Serbia and the Serbian people, ”said his father Srdjan, who previously told local media that his son was“ the Spartacus of the new world ”.
He also stated that the visa issue “has nothing to do with sport, it is a political agenda. Jesus was crucified and endured many things, but he is still alive among us. Novak is also crucified… He will endure ”.

“I spoke with him a couple of hours ago, he was good, we didn’t speak a lot but we spoke for a few minutes. He was trying to sleep, but he couldn’t,” Djokovic’s mother, Dijana, said.
“As a mother, what can I say, you can just imagine how I feel, I feel terrible since yesterday, the last 24 hours. They are keeping him like a prisoner, it’s just not fair, it’s not human. I hope he will stay strong as we are also trying, to give him some energy to keep going. I hope he will win.’
“His accommodation [is] terrible. It’s just some small, immigration hotel, if it is a hotel at all. With bugs, it’s all dirty, the food is terrible. They don’t want to give him a chance to move to a better hotel or a rented house.”
Her words were backed up by Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic, who said: ‘The whole of Serbia is with him and our authorities are undertaking all measures in order that maltreatment of the world’s best tennis player ends as soon as possible.’
Djokovic’s father then went on to reiterate his views on Thursday when he demonstrated in front of the National Assembly buildings. Srdjan spoke at a press conference to highlight what the Serbian’s family and his supporters perceive as an “injustice”.
“Look, I definitely believe in taking action, I got vaccinated because of others and for my mum’s health, but how we are handling Novak’s situation is bad, really bad” wrote on Twitter Nick Kyrgios, Australian player and outspoken critic of some of Djokovic’s views on experimental gene sera, which actually can alter DNA, according to a geneticist from Cologne, and have caused many victims in Italy as well in Germany.

Djokovic flew to Australia after obtaining a medical exemption backed by the country’s tennis federation and approved by the Victorian state government. The reasons for the exemption were not disclosed. But the Australian government declared him invalid when he arrived because it was based only on a doctor’s statement.
According to some rumors circulated on social media, he would in fact have obtained an exemption because he was deemed unsuitable for the vaccine after having requested a specific medical prescription for administration, as many health and school workers are doing together with police and military in Italy thanks to a form prepared by the ‘lawyer Renate Holzeisen.
Australia’s COVID-19 rules say incoming travelers must have had two shots of an approved vaccine, or must have an exemption with a genuine medical reason, such as an acute condition, to avoid quarantine. All players, staff, officials and fans need to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 to enter the tournament venue.
Djokovic has been challenged on social media for having been given special treatment by obtaining the visa due to which he is now trapped. But he wasn’t the only one.
Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said earlier this week that 26 people connected with the tournament applied for medical exemptions and only a “handful” were granted. Three of those have since been challenged.
The Australian Border Force said Friday that after further investigations into two other people connected to the Australian Open, one voluntarily left the country and another was taken into detention pending deportation.
The Czech Embassy identified one of them as 38-year-old doubles player Renata Voráčová and said she won’t play in the tournament. She has joined Novak Djokovic in immigration detention after having her visa canceled.
Renata Voracova was detained after being informed by Australian Border Force officials that she had to leave the country. Czech officials are seeking an explanation to the situation but said Voracova had decided to leave Australia.
Probably for this reason she was arrested, unlike Djokovic who, having made an appeal, is still legally on Australian territory even if subjected to the same state of detention for forced quarantine.
The dispute over Djokovic has become a topic of political significance in a city where residents spent 256 days in 2020-21 under severe restrictions on their movement. In recent days, an Australian girl said she was forcibly taken by the police to one of the concentration camps for people in quarantine only because she had had contact with a person who later tested positive.
