UPDATE ON JANUARY, 13, 2024

Berlin is planning to send its F-124 ‘Hessen’ frigate to the Gulf of Aden early next month, the German newspaper Die Welt’s weekend edition reported, citing sources. The Sachsen class vessel is equipped with a reconnaissance radar capable of simultaneously detecting up to 1,000 targets, air defense missiles, and attack helicopters. It also carries anti-ship Harpoon missiles and torpedoes.

The warship is reportedly scheduled to leave German shores on February 1 and head towards the Red Sea. The paper reported that the move is expected to be part of a new EU maritime mission in the area.

The situation in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden remains tense amid a decision by London and Washington to launch a military operation there in response to the actions of the Yemen-based Houthi Islamist group.

The USS Carney destroyer has fired Tomahawk cruise missiles at a Houthi radar station in Yemen, US Central Command (CENTCOM) has said, confirming reports in the media.

The strikes occurred on January, 13 at 3:45 am local time and were “a follow-on action” to the US and UK bombardment of the previous night.

Yemeni TV station Al-Masirah said the missiles targeted the capital, Sanaa.

The US and UK began carrying out airstrikes on Houthi militias in Yemen in the early hours of Friday in response to the group targeting shipping routes in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

Washington and London launched their attacks without authorization from the UN Security Council.

US President Joe Biden is also facing accusations from American lawmakers that he violated the Constitution as he didn’t ask for permission from Congress for the military operation.

The US Air Force’s Mideast command said it struck over 60 targets at 16 sites in Yemen on Thursday night, including “command-and-control nodes, munitions depots, launching systems, production facilities and air defense radar systems” and involving Tomahawk missiles and fighter jets.

The Houthis, who have pledged to support Gaza amid fighting between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, have launched multiple drones and missiles targeting merchant vessels, as well as warships patrolling the vital waterway since mid-October.

The Houthis are a Shia Islamist militia that rose to power following a wave of protests known as the Arab Spring, which swept the Middle East in the early 2010s.

Kremlin condemns ‘illegal’ US-UK attacks in Yemen

The overnight airstrikes conducted by the US and the UK against targets in Yemen were illegal, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists on Friday.

The attacks on dozens of targets in Yemen were conducted by the US and the UK with support the Netherlands, Australia, Bahrain and Canada, according to the US Central Command. Washington claimed the strikes were “defensive” in nature and were aimed at the de-escalation of tensions in the Middle East.

“We condemn them,” Peskov said when asked about the action during a media briefing. “The [UN Security Council] resolution gives no right for strikes, and consequently they are illegitimate under international law.”

The Russian presidential spokesman was referring to the January 10 UN document that called on the Houthi movement to cease attacks on merchant vessels. The Western strikes on several locations in Yemen reportedly targeted military assets of the militant group.

Earlier in the day Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described the Russian position. She said that a concern which Moscow has had, that US activities at the UN Security Council “were just a pretext for further escalation of the situation in the region,” have been confirmed by the attacks.

“A massive military escalation in the area of the Red Sea may nullify all positive trends which have emerged recently in the Yemen reconciliation process, and trigger destabilization of the entire Middle East,” she warned.

Russia was among the four members of the Security Council, alongside Algeria, China, and Mozambique, who abstained during Wednesday’s vote on Resolution 2722.

Zakharova stated that the US has a record of manipulating UN decisions in attempts to justify military adventures, citing as examples the 2011 NATO bombing of Libya and the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

“The peoples of those nations and the entire region still feel the consequences of Washington’s illegal military interventions and its sidekicks,” the diplomat said. Moscow perceives the strikes as a threat to global peace, and thus a matter that the Security Council must address.

Iran strongly condemns ‘arbitrary’ attacks on Yemen

Iran has strongly condemned US and British military attacks on Yemen, calling them an “arbitrary” action and a clear violation of the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and a violation of international laws and regulations.

Yemen’s Ansarullah officials said explosions hit the cities of Sana’a, Hudaydah, Sa’ada and Dhamar early Friday, with a US official announcing that American and British attacks against Yemen were carried out by airplanes, ships and submarines.

In Iran’s first reaction to the aggression, Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kan’ani stressed that the “arbitrary attacks will have no result other than fueling insecurity and instability in the region”.

“These military attacks are carried out in line with the continuation of the full support of the United States and the United Kingdom for the last hundred days of the Zionist regime’s war crimes against the Palestinian nation and the oppressed citizens under the complete siege of the Gaza Strip,” he said.

“While the Zionist regime continues its attacks and war crimes in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank in Palestine, the United States and England are trying to detract the attention of the people of the world from the crimes of this fake, criminal and aggressor regime against the people of Palestine by expanding their umbrella of support for the Zionist regime,” he said.

Kan’ani expressed his concern about the consequences of such arbitrary attacks for regional and international peace and security, calling on the international community to prevent the spread of war, instability and insecurity in the region with responsible reactions and actions.

US Congress divided on Yemen bombing

Lawmakers in Washington have given mixed reactions to a series of US and UK strikes on Houthi targets in Yemen, with some questioning whether President Joe Biden had full authorization for the move.

While a number of Republicans were critical of the operation – among them libertarian-leaning Representative Thomas Massie – several members of Biden’s own party also slammed the decision.

Democratic Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib argued that Biden lacked the authority to approve the military action, saying he was “violating Article I of the Constitution” and that Americans were “tired of endless war.”

Other Democrats, including Ro Khanna, Val Hoyle and Mark Pocan, made a similar case, with Khanna penning a lengthy post on X (formerly Twitter) arguing that Biden “needs to come to Congress before launching a strike against the Houthis in Yemen and involving us in another Middle East conflict.” “That is Article I of the Constitution. I will stand up for that regardless of whether a Democrat or Republican is in the White House,” he added.

Republican Senator Mike Lee later weighed in on the strikes, saying: “I totally agree with [Ro Khanna]. The Constitution matters, regardless of party affiliation.” Republicans Matt Gaetz and Marjorie Taylor Greene also criticized the military action. “Biden can not solely decide to bomb Yemen,” Greene said.

Democratic Party Rep. Sara Jacobs said the Biden administration had a “solemn responsibility to protect our service members in harm’s way, and free and open laws of the sea.” Jacobs said “congressional leadership was briefed”before the attack, and stressed that “Congress alone authorizes war.”
